Forensic Mental Health

Support for individuals, families and couples navigating mental health and/or the legal system

Legal involvement can turn your life upside down. Whether you’re personally facing charges or other legal concerns, or someone you love is involved in the legal system, it can be difficult to know what to do next—or even how to process what’s happening.

You may be dealing with fear about the future, frustration with a system you don’t understand, strained relationships, or the emotional impact of everything that has happened. As a loved one, you may find yourself trying to be supportive while also feeling angry, worried, confused, or unsure of where your responsibility ends.

My background in forensic mental health allows me to understand the unique intersection between mental health, behavior, relationships, and the legal system. Our work can focus on making sense of what has happened, navigating what is happening now, and figuring out how to move forward.

Areas I Can Help With

Navigating Your Own Legal Involvement
Managing the stress and uncertainty that can come with legal involvement while working through the mental health, relationship, or life circumstances that may be affecting you along the way.

Supporting Someone Involved in the Legal System
Helping family members and loved ones process what is happening, better understand their loved one’s circumstances, and navigate the complicated emotions that can come with supporting someone through legal difficulties.

Understanding Mental Health & Behavior
Making sense of mental health symptoms, diagnoses, patterns of behavior, and how these may affect a person’s functioning, relationships, decision-making, and current circumstances.

Communication, Relationships & Boundaries
Legal involvement often affects far more than the person directly involved. Therapy can help individuals and families work through difficult conversations, establish healthier boundaries, and determine what support can realistically look like.

Coping With Uncertainty
Court dates, changing circumstances, unanswered questions, and an uncertain future can create significant stress. We can work on managing what you can’t control while identifying the things you can.

What a Typical Session Looks Like

Each session lasts about 50 minutes and may involve:

  • Processing the emotional impact of your own or a loved one’s legal involvement

  • Talking through current stressors, relationships, or changing circumstances

  • Understanding mental health symptoms, diagnoses, or patterns of behavior

  • Exploring the circumstances that may have contributed to where things are today

  • Developing healthier ways to cope with stress, anger, anxiety, guilt, or uncertainty

  • Working on communication and boundaries within families and relationships

  • Balancing support for a loved one with your own emotional well-being

  • Exploring accountability without judgment or shame

  • Problem-solving around challenges you’re currently facing

  • Identifying realistic goals and what moving forward can look like

Ongoing Sessions

As therapy continues, sessions become a steady space in your week where you can check in with yourself and reflect on what’s unfolding.

You don’t have to spend the entire session talking about the legal case. You are more than the situation that brought you here. Sessions are shaped around what you need—whether that means processing what happened, navigating what’s happening now, supporting someone you love, or focusing on the parts of life that have nothing to do with the legal system at all.

Confidentiality & Safety

Everything shared in therapy is confidential, with a few legal and safety exceptions that will be clearly explained at the start of our work together.

I work in line with professional ethical guidelines and attend regular supervision to ensure your safety and wellbeing are always prioritized.
